Australia’s Most Advanced Whale Watching Vessel
Spirit of Migaloo II is a three-level whale watching vessel with an open bow, offering ample seating and prime viewing opportunities. Purpose-built as one of Australia’s premier whale watching vessels, it provides one of the best ways to experience the awe-inspiring humpback whale migration.
Boarding
Guests access the pontoon via a gently declining ramp that is 1.5 metres wide at its narrowest point. The steepness of the ramp may vary with the tide, and access can be more challenging during certain tidal conditions. Assistance may be required, and our friendly crew are available to help if needed.
Access to the Spirit of Migaloo II is via a ramp measuring 0.8 metres wide and 1.6 metres long, with handrails on both sides at a height of 0.92 metres. The ramp supports a maximum weight of 300 kg. Priority boarding is offered to guests with access needs, and our crew are available to assist if required.
Wheelchair Access
Spirit of Migaloo II is wheelchair accessible on the lower deck only, which can be accessed via a ramp from the jetty. One designated space is available for a wheelchair. For safety and comfort during the tour, we recommend securing wheelchairs using safety tethers. The skipper prioritises positioning the vessel to give wheelchair users the best possible view of the whales.
Movement of wheelchairs around the vessel is at the skipper’s discretion, as weather and ocean conditions may affect safety and stability. These are advisory measures, and wheelchair users are encouraged to make decisions based on their own comfort and confidence.
Restrooms
There are two standard unisex restrooms on the lower deck and one standard unisex toilet on the mid-deck.
All of these restrooms have a toilet seat height of 0.44 metres, a handrail that is 0.9 metres high and a sink that is 0.85 metres high. The door frame is 0.69 metres wide.
There is one ambulant restroom.
Change places
A collapsible infant change table is available on request. It is suitable for newborns up to 12 months of age, with a weight capacity of 11 kilograms. Please note that height-adjustable, adult-sized change benches and ceiling-mounted hoists are not available onboard.
Mobility Aids
Mobility aids are welcome onboard and must meet the manoeuvrability requirements outlined in the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002.
If you require an alternative device, complimentary wheelchair hire is available. A booking form is required, and reservations must be made at least 24 hours before departure by contacting Guest Services on 07 5539 9299.
Strollers
Due to limited space, we kindly ask that strollers and prams not be brought onboard. If departing from our Sea World Cruises Terminal, Main Beach, we can store your strollers or prams for the duration of your cruise.
Visual Considerations
Handrails are installed around the edges of the vessel to support safe movement while walking onboard. Our experienced skippers always aim to provide the best possible views of the whales.
For guests with visual impairments, we recommend bringing binoculars to enhance the viewing experience. Our crew are available to assist if needed. Assistance animals are welcome onboard – for more information, please refer to our Assistance Animals guide.
Auditory Considerations
While transiting to and from the Humpback Highway, engine noise may make conversation difficult for some guests who are hard of hearing. Once whales are located, the engines are slowed significantly and become much quieter. During whale watching, live commentary is provided through speakers positioned throughout the vessel. Subject to whale behaviour, live whale song may also be played through the vessel’s sound system using our specialised hydrophone.
Weather Considerations
The amount of vessel movement depends on weather conditions. If rough weather is expected to impact the cruise, passengers will be notified in advance.
Sensory Considerations
A dedicated sensory or quiet space is not available onboard. However, sensory kits – including pop bubble fidget toys and earplugs – are available upon request. Complimentary children’s activity packs are also provided. For more information, please refer to our Sensory Guide.
Environmental Considerations
Spirit of Migaloo II whale watching tours venture out to the Humpback Highway, in the open ocean. There is a risk of seasickness. If you would like to take precautions, please refer to our Sea Sickness Advice.
Once the vessel has passed through the Gold Coast Seaway, we recommend all passengers maintain three points of contact for safety at all times.
